Spanish has two different versions of “to be” ser and estar. Ser is used for TONIC: Time, Ocupation, Nationality, Identification,  Characteristics

Estar is used for temporary conditions and location.
Ser: I am — yo soy, you are — tu eres, he/she is — el/ella es, we are — nosotros somos, you guys are — Ustedes son, they are — ellos/ellas son.
Soy de los estados unidos. I am from the United States.
Somos amigos. We are friends

Estar: I am — yo estoy, you are estas, he/she is — el/ella esta, we are — nosostors estamos, you guys are — ustedes son, they are — ellos/ellas son.
Estoy triste — I am sad. Estas aqui? Are you here?
Donde esta la casa? Where is the house?
