Portuguese: Present tense verbs

This set of videos focus on the present tense of verbs and how we conjugate them. Portuguese has three verb endings. -ar, -er, and -ir. Below there are videos and excercises that explain them as well as some other present tense verbs that are important, like ser/estar – to be. So, boa sorte!!!

Prsent Tense: Ser vs Estar: The different ways to say “to be”

SER: used with Time, Ocupation, Nationality, Identification, and Characteristics.

Eu sou Mark – I am Mark, Tu es portugues – you are portuguese, Voce e brasileira – you are Brazilian, ele e gordo – he is fat, ela e linda – she is pretty, nos somos de Lisboa – we are from Lisbon, voces sao

ESTAR: used with temporary conditions and locations

Eu estou doente – I am sick, tu estas bem – you are ok, voce esta aqui – you are here, ele esta ahi – he is there, ela esta em Lisboa – she is in Lisbon, nos estamos em Portugal – we are in Portugal, voces estao tarde – you guys are late, eles estao doente – they are sick, elas estao em Faro – they (female) are in Faro.

Present Tense: AR, ER, IR endings

AR VERBS: Falar – to speak, Eu falo – I speak, Tu falas – You speak (informal Portugal), Voce fala – you speak (formal in Portugal, only you form singular in Brazil), ele fala – he speaks, ela fala – she speaks, nos falamos – we speak, voces falam – you guys speak, eles falam – they speak (masculine or mix), elas falam – they speak (females only).

ER VERBS: Escrever – to write, eu escrevo – I write, tu escreves – you write (informal Portugal), voce escreve – you write (formal in Portugal, only you used in Brazil), ele escreve – he writes, ela escreve – she writes, nos escrevemos – we write, voces escrevem – you guys write, eles escrevem – they write (masculine or mixed), elas escrevem – they write (feminine).

IR VERBS: abrir – to open, eu abro – I open, tu abres – you open, voce abre – you open (Brazil), ele abre – he opens, ela abre – she opens, nos abrimos – we open, voces abrem – you guys open, eles abrem – they open (masculine, mixed), elas abrem – they open (female).

Ter and Haver: To have and There is:

Ter – to have, eu tenho, tu tens, voce tem, ele tem, ela tem, nos temos, voces tem, eles tem, elas tem.

Haver – there is… only one that really matters is “ha” as in there, is there someone here? Ha alguem aqui? Yes there is! Sim, ha!

Model Verbs: Can (Poder), Want (Querer), Should (dever), Have to (ter que)

All the model verbs follow the same formation.

Model verb + infinitive of helping verb.

Eu posso cantar – I can sing. Eu quero dancar – I want to dance. Tens que visitar Portugal – You have to visit Portugal.

Can (to be able) – poder: I can – eu posso, you can – tu podes (informal portugal), voce pode – you can (formal, Brazil), he can – ele pode, she can – ela pode, we can – nos podemos, voces podem – you guys can, they can (masculine) – eles podem, they can feminine – elas podem.

To Want – Querer: Eu quero – I want, tu quers – you want, voce quer – you want, ele quer – he wants, ela quer – she wants, nos queremos – we want, voces querem – you guys want, eles querem – they want (masculine), elas querem – they want (feminine)

Should – dever: Eu devo, tu deves, voce deve, ele deve, ela deve, nos devemos, voces devem, eles devem, elas devem.

Have to – ter que: Eu tenho que, tu tens que, voce tem que, ele tem que, ela tem que, nos temos que, voces tem que, eles tem que, elas tem que

 

Saber and Conhecer: Different ways to say “to know”

Brincar, Tocar, Jogar the verbs for “to play”

Brincar = to play as in kids play or to play with toys.

Tocar = to play, but as in musical instruments.

Jogar = to play, but to play sports.

Andar, ficar and taking the Metro in Lisbon

Andar is “to walk” or “to go.” You may here parents yelling at their kids, “Anda, anda!!” it means walk or go go.

Ficar is “to stay.” If you say you are staying it is “Eu fico” but you can also say “fica bem” which means “stay well” and is used as a way to say bye.
