Prepositions help us in many ways when we communicate, whether they are general, time, or location prepositions.

Time Prepositions:
1. (a) – (at) (on)
a. Hour/time: Nos vemos as tres horas. We will see each other at three o’clock.
b. Parts of the day: Nos vemos a noite. We will see each other at night.
c. Days of the week (general happenings). Vamos a igreja ao Domingo. We go to church on Sundays.
d. Dates: the numbered day: Hoje e a 14 de Fevereiro. Today is the 14th of February.
2. (De) – from, in
a. Dates (months). Hoje e a 14 de Fevereiro. Today is the 14th of February.
b. Parts of the day. Sao as tres da tarde. It is three in the afternoon.
c. From… to (period of time) A festa e das 10 as 3 horas. The party is from 10 to 3.
3. (Em) – in, on (remember em + o/a/os/as = no/na/nos/nas
a. Dates with the word “dia” Celebramos no dia 6. We celebrate on the 6th.
b. Days of the week (specific events). Nos vemos no sabado as 3 horas.
c. Holidays. No natal – at/on Christmas. Na pascoa – at Easter
d. Seasons. No inverno nao neve em Lisboa. In the winter it doesn’t snow in Lisbon.
4. Para – ‘til, for
a. time – cinco para as dez. Five ‘til 10. (in terms of the time of the day 9:55)
b.General time. Para a semana que vem, tenho que estudar muito. For the coming week, I have to study a lot.
5.Por – for
a.Approximate time. Eu acho que a festa comeca pelas 10. I believe the party starts at 10.
b.Period of time. Fico em Portugal por uma semana.
6.Ate – until
a.This is not so much a preposition as it is a commonly used “time term”
b.Until – ate amanha – until tomorrow. Nao vou sair ate eu tenho respostas. I am not going to leave until I have answers.
