Learn Portuguese: Present Tense Model Verbs
All the model verbs follow the same formation.
Model verb + infinitive of helping verb.
Eu posso cantar — I can sing. Eu quero dancar — I want to dance. Tens que visitar Portugal — You have to visit Portugal.
Can (to be able) — poder:
I can — eu posso,
you can — tu podes (informal portugal),
voce pode — you can (formal, Brazil),
he can — ele pode,
she can — ela pode,
we can — nos podemos,
voces podem — you guys can,
they can (masculine) — eles podem,
they can feminine — elas podem.
To Want — Querer:
Eu quero — I want,
tu quers — you want,
voce quer — you want,
ele quer — he wants,
ela quer — she wants,
nos queremos — we want,
voces querem — you guys want,
eles querem — they want (masculine),
elas querem — they want (feminine)
Should — dever,
I should – Eu devo,
You Should (informal) – tu deves,
You Should (formal) – voce deve,
He should – ele deve,
She Should – ela deve,
We should – nos devemos,
You guys (plural) should – voces devem,
They Should (male/mixed) – eles devem,
They Should (females only) – elas devem,
Have to — ter que,
I have to – Eu tenho que,
You Have to – tu tens que, voce tem que,
He Has to – ele tem que,
She has to – ela tem que,
We have to – nos temos que,
You guys (plural) – voces tem que,
