They are sometimes taken for granted when you study languages, but take it from me. After mistaking Monday for Tuesday and having to beg to get on a flight back to Buenos Aires one night, you do not make that mistake again. So here goes!

Desde is since in terms of when you have the specific day or time you start from. Eu falo portuguese desde 2006. I speak portuguese since 2006. While “ha” is more general. Eu falo portugues ha 3 anos. I speak Portuguese for/since 3 years.
