while observing the statues of Marx and Engles I thought of the past and thus here is the simple past in German. You have to form it with either haben or sein and then the past particple. You use haben with verbs that transfer action onto something else, for example eating, drinking, hitting, while you use sein for movement as in went, traveled, swam. The participles are made with adding “ge” to the beginning of the verb you are doing in the past and the ending changes. I went to Berlin – Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren. I drank a beer – ich habe ein Bier getrunken.

the past tense is simple in German, but when using sein (to be) and haben (to have) you have to use them a bit differently. From Wernigerode. I was – ich war, you were – du warst, he/she was – er/sie war, we were – wir waren, they (you formal)were – sie waren.
I had – ich hatte, you had – du hattest, he/she had – er/sie hatte, we had – wir hatten, you guys/ they had – sie hatten.
